The plantation featured a large number of slaves who were used to work on the plantations tobacco and rice crops. It also had a large number of free Africans who worked on the plantation as laborers or servants. The free Africans were often brought over from Africa as part of a slave trade deal between England and Spain. The plantation was also home to a small number of white indentured servants who were given an opportunity to stay on the property in exchange for working for a set period of time.

The plantation eventually went through many changes over the years, but it remained one of the most important in Pennsylvania for many years. Today, it is open to visitors as part of the Wayne Heritage Area.
